SALT
An Ongoing Fine-Art Series by VONCLEEF
SALT marks a deliberate departure from the meticulously controlled artifice of high-end commercial directing. Operating as the fine-art persona of Mike Van Cleven, VONCLEEF strips away the polished veneer to return to the primal and the unvarnished. This series is a cinematic exploration of the spaces between breaths—the silent, visceral narratives etched into the human form.
The Elemental Residue
The title SALT evokes the raw substance of the human experience. It is the sting of the elements, the trace of physical exertion, the heavy resistance of the ocean, and the lingering aftermath of unguarded emotion. It is the unyielding truth that remains when all superfluous layers are stripped away.
Dropping the Armor
At its core, SALT is an intimate, uncompromising exploration of female inner strength and absolute self-possession. Moving past the traditional dynamic of the passive muse, this series is built entirely on profound mutual trust and collaboration. It documents the radical, conscious decision of the subject to drop their physical and emotional armor. Whether standing unyielding against a harsh midday sun or taking a quiet, rebellious reprieve, the women in these frames own their space. SALT redefines vulnerability not as a weakness, but as an absolute, immovable power.
Cinematic Realism
Visually, the project anchors the ethereal nature of the human soul in a heavy, tactile reality. Utilising stark, high-contrast monochrome and directional light, the series shapes a narrative of deep, graphic shadows. The environments—sun-baked Mediterranean stone, dark waters, and arid architectural expanses—are never relegated to mere backdrops. They are active, breathing participants who provide the physical friction against which the quiet, statuesque strength of the subjects is measured.
SALT captures the exact equilibrium where flawless cinematic execution meets uncompromising personal integrity. It invites you to look past the surface and deeply feel the texture, the heat, and the unapologetic truth of the human condition.
